MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN Says Bands Were More Prepared To Record Back In The Day
April 13, 2018According to The Pulse Of Radio, TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE frontman Maynard James Keenan said in an interview with Matt Pinfield that musicians needed to be much more prepared when they went in the studio years ago than they do now. Keenan explained: "Back in the day, those guys did their homework. Going back to old classic rock tracks, listening to the old QUEEN isolated tracks — they did their homework because you have to understand the medium. The art and your approach to the art shifts basically over time according to the medium and whatever's forgiving in the medium."
Keenan continued: "So back in the day when you had those 24 tracks of tape, there was no flying this vocal in from over there to get to that. You had to get it right. So before you even walked into the studio to spend $2,000-3,000 a day to be there, you rehearsed the crap out of it so that you can get it right the first time, so you're not wasting money and wasting time. These guys were already pros."
He added: "Now it's like, I just kind of wake up and roll out of bed and regurgitate it on the tape and have somebody fix it, if not completely replace it."
A PERFECT CIRCLE's first studio album in 14 years, "Eat The Elephant", is due for release on April 20.
Keenan's main band, TOOL, is in the midst of recording its first new LP since 2006's "10,000 Days". The album is expected out later this year.
The singer told The Pulse Of Radio a while back that he never writes music with a specific act in mind. "It could be the exact same rhythm or exact same melody, it's just going to end up being what it's going to be no matter where it lands," he said. "It's going to be different, just because it's going to be a different set of people interpreting it. So it doesn't really matter. No things are designated one way or the other, just whatever ends up coming up in the conversations with those musicians is what it ends up being."
Keenan will be touring with both TOOL and A PERFECT CIRCLE throughout the rest of 2018.
